Wisteria floribunda 'Rosea'

Japanese Rose Wisteria

Location

The South Front of the House

Description:

Hardy, climbing shrub that can grow to over 30m over many supports via powerful clockwise-twining stems with distinctive fragrant, pale-rose, tipped purple, flower racemes in mid-spring that can reach nearly half a meter in length and dark-green, leaves 10-30 cm in length. Poisonous, brown, velvety, bean-like seed pods 5-10 cm long mature in summer and persist until winter.

Site and Care:

Grow in moist soil of any type and full sun. The plant often lives over fifty years but will only flower after passing from juvenile to adult stage, a transition that may take many frustrating years. The early flowering time of wisteria can cause problems in temperate climates, where early frosts can destroy the coming years' flowers. Prune trailing shoots not required to extend shape and form in August and prune back to three buds in January to encourage flowering.
