A rare showy, fragrant, deciduous hardy shrub or small tree to 6m, for the early spring garden, native to China. Pale pink bell-shaped flowers, in nodding 10cm (4in) panicles appear before the bronze young leaves, followed by greenish-white bladder like fruit to 10cm (4in) long. It is these seed capsules that give rise to the common name
Site and Care:
It requires a moist but well-drained soil, of any type, in full sun or dappled shade. Any pruning should be done immediately after flowering.
