Hinton Ampner Garden

Pyracantha 'Orange Charmer'

Firethorne

Location

The Front of the house.

Description:

A vigorous, dense, prickly, evergreen shrub with glossy, bright green foliage and clusters of small, white flowers in summer followed by dark orange berries in autumn and winter.

Site and Care:

Plant in any type of soil as long as the site is not waterlogged. They do grow better in fertile, well-drained soil. Best planted in full sun they will accept full shade but may not produce as many berries but here at Hinton they happily berry to 10 metres. Trained against a wall they should be planted 30-40cm away from the wall and may need some training initially but they are strong enough to hold themselves against the wall. Prune for shape in the spring. Propagate by cuttings in summer.
