Pennisetum alopecuroides ‘Red Head’
Fountain Grass
Location
The Walled Garden.
Description:
A hardy tall-growing grass native to Eastern Asia with a dramatic foliage variegation pattern of irregular transverse bands of creamy white and green arranged horizontally across the entire length of its leaves. The tall silky quills of soft-pinkish-purple flowers in late summer turn a golden russet and the flower plumes fade to a luminous silvery white in the autumn.
Site and Care:
Easy to cultivate and very undemanding, it prefers full sun or partial shade and will grow in a wide range of well-drained soils. Old foliage should be cut to the ground in early spring. Drought tolerant once established. Propagation is by division in the spring.
