Hinton Ampner Garden

Paeonia mlokosewitschii

'Molly the witch'

Location

The Dell & The Church Border

Description:

Clump forming hardy perennial, 75cm (30in) high, with soft bluish-green foliage, native to the Caucasus Mountains. The single flowers are pale lemon yellow appearing in May with numerous golden stamens and purple stigmas. There is another spell of glory in the autumn when the seed capsules burst to reveal a mix of scarlet and shiny blue seeds. Slow growing to begin with, once established it will reward the patient gardener with a magnificent display each year.

Site and Care:

Avoid sites which are waterlogged, too arid or too shady. Good drainage is beneficial but will tolerate most normal garden conditions quite happily. Fresh blue seeds, not scarlet, sown in September, should germinate by March.
