Miscanthus sinensis ‘Zebrinus’

Japanese Silver Grass or Zebra Grass

Location:

The Walled Garden.

Description:

A hardy tall-growing grass native to Eastern Asia with a dramatic foliage variegation pattern of irregular transverse bands of creamy white and green arranged horizontally across the entire length of its leaves. The tall silky quills of soft-pinkish-purple flowers in late summer turn a golden russet and the flower plumes fade to a luminous silvery white in the autumn.

Site and Care:

Easy to cultivate and very undemanding, it prefers full sun and will grow in a wide range of well-drained soils. They begin to reshoot inside the old stems early in the year and they should be cut down in late January or early February. Propagation is by division in the spring.
