Magnolia wilsonii - Magnolia sinensis
Location
The Magnolia Garden.
Description:
M. wilsonii is a large wide-spreading deciduous shrub 3m (10ft) x 3m (10ft) with fairly slim , pointed leaves and pendulous, saucer-shaped, fragrant white flowers with crimson stamens in late spring. It differs from M. sinensis a close relation in having narrower leaves and rather smaller flowers. Both are native to Western China.
Site and Care:
Both are best in partial shade and are moderately lime-tolerant but here they grow in a seam of acid clay a medium they thrive in. Little or no pruning is required unless for shape. Propagation is difficult from seed and heel-cuttings taken in early summer.
