Dierama igneum

Fairy Wand Flower

Location

The south front of the house/terrace border.

Description:

Sun loving draught tolerant architectural evergreen plant with gracefully arching, long, fine, hair-like stems. Dark pink wide-flaring flowers in summer. This spectacular little-known corm 3' high x 2' wide; hardy comes from South Africa. Quick to form clumps but can take up to 4 years to flower from seed.

Site and Care:

Plants resent transplanting but once established they will spread rapidly. Protect plants with a dry winter mulch and cut back to a low permanent framework each spring or after flowering to keep tidy. Will grow in any well-drained soil ideally against a warm, sunny wall protected from cold winds. Propagate by basal or root cuttings and seed.
