Crocus chrysanthus ‘Snow Bunting’

Location

The House Forecourt.

Description:

A dwarf, up to 10cm, deciduous hardy perennial growing from a corm, with goblet-shaped, fragrant, clear deep yellow flowers appearing with the narrow, greyish leaves in late winter and early spring.Created almost a hundred years ago, in 1914, by the great plantsman E. A. Bowles, it is still one of the best spring-flowering crocuses available. The flowers have a rich gold heart and a light feathering of greyish purple at the base of the petals on the outside. The orange anthers add a fiery spark.

Site and Care:

Grow in full sun in any aspect, exposed or sheltered, in a gritty, poor to moderately fertile soil of any type.  If it is simply left alone it will spread into an impressive clump flowering generously each spring in February and March. It will also grow in grass. Propagate by seed, sown in pots in a cold frame when ripe or remove cormlets when dormant
