Hinton Ampner Garden

Aquilegia

Rocky Mountain Columbine

Location

The Long Walk

Description:

Clump-forming hardy herbaceous perennial with long-stalked, divided basal leaves and erect, leafy stems bearing bell-shaped flowers with spreading, coloured sepals and petals with spurs, on branched stems. The colloquial name Grannies Bonnet refers to our native British aquilegia whereas the varieties here are native of the North American mid-west through to the Rocky Mountains. Depicted above are the four main groups but they have readily hybridised to create multiple variations.

Site and Care:

Grow in fertile, moist but well-drained soil, of any type, in full sun or partial shade. Cut back after flowering. Propagate by seed sown in spring, late summer or early autumn
