Mahonia eurybracteata subsp. Ganipinensis 'Soft Caress'

Oregan Grape

Location

The Walled Garden

Description:

Mahonias are grown for their attractive foliage and fragrant, showy winter flowers. This is the first Mahonia to have spine-free leaves and is a compact, mound-forming, evergreen, hardy shrub producing arching to spreading racemes of lightly fragrant, bright yellow flowers from mid-autumn into late winter followed by spherical, blue-black berries. "Plant of the Year" at RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2013.

Site and Care:

Plant in any type of soil, in shade or partial shade, as long as the site is not waterlogged. They do grow better in fertile, well-drained soil. Remove top of stem in May to encourage bushy habit and cut back suckers and any dead wood at the same time. Apply a generous mulch of well-rotted garden compost or manure around the base of the plant in winter. Propagate by hardwood cuttings in autumn and winter.
