Climbing Hydrangea
Location
The East Front of the House
Description:
An unusual evergreen climber, native to Mexico, with large, glossy, leathery, serrated, dark green leaves and creamy-white, flat flower heads in summer which emerge from distinctive large round buds. Ideal for clothing a wall it is not as vigorous as the more familiar H. petiolaris, but if left unpruned, it will eventually reach a height and spread of 10 metres.
Site and Care:
Prefers semi-shade and fertile, moist but well drained soil, of any type in a sheltered position. Requires more shade in dry conditions. Pruning should be done after flowering but only to remove unwanted shoots or to contain spread. Provide a good layer of mulch after pruning. Propagate by softwood cuttings in early summer or hardwood cuttings in winter.
