Hinton Ampner Garden

Hydrangea arborescens 'Annabelle'

Location

The Walled Garden

Description:

A deciduous hardy shrub with serrate leaves (3-8" long) and a rounded habit up to 1.5m. Stunning sterile, white symmetrical, round flower heads up to 10" in diameter, appear for up to two months in summer. Discovered in the north mid-west of the USA the blooms are so large that they tend to bend to the ground after a rain often flattening the entire shrub.

Site and Care:

Easily grown in average, medium, well-drained soil in part shade it will tolerate full sun if grown with constant moisture as it is intolerant of drought. Unlike H. macrophylla it can be pruned in late winter each year but it is beneficial to build a strong framework to support the large blooms. Propagation is by cuttings in late summer or layering.
