Deutzia compacta
Compact Deutzia
Location
The Autumn Border
Description:
A rare deciduous hardy shrub, 2-3 m tall. Flowers are white, or sometimes pinkish, fragrant, 1.2-1.8 cm across, borne in compact clusters on long lateral branches native to the foothills of the Himalayas. Petals overlap when the flower is not fully open. Flowers have a set of outer stamens and a set of inner stamens. The outer ones have flat broad filaments, giving the impression of the inner stamens being surrounded by a frilly cup. Leaves are green above and below with minutely toothed margins.
Site and Care:
Grow in any type of well-drained soil in sun or partial shade. Prune immediately after flowering in early summer to maintain shape. Avoid over pruning; best results come from allowing it to expand to its natural size. Propagation is by softwood cuttings in summer.
