Hinton Ampner Garden

Abelia trifolia

Indian Abelia

Location:

The Terrace Border

Description:

A deciduous hardy shrub, native to the N. W. Himalaya, growing to 3.5 m (11ft) by 3 m (9ft) at a slow rate with small dark green leaves and in June/July produces masses of highly fragrant pink tinged white flowers which are carried in clusters at the tips.

Site and Care:

Grow in any type of well drained soil, including very alkaline, in sun or partial shade. It prefers dry or moist soil. Prune in the spring removing older wood to maintain shape. Avoid over pruning; best results come from allowing it to expand to its natural size. Propagation is by softwood cuttings in summer.
